Living in Utah, many of us are familiar with the reality of polygamy. When I first moved here almost 40 years ago, I was shocked to see young girls dressed like they were from "Little House on the Prairie." My husband explained that they were part of polygamist communities. I couldn't believe that this practice was still happening, with individuals giving up their agency in the belief that it would secure their place in heaven.
Over the years, I've seen the impact of this way of life on children—those who are kicked out of their homes at a young age or those who are simply looking for guidance after being neglected. Here in Utah, we strive as a society to help these children. Many have stepped up, just as I have, to offer support and guidance.
This weekend, I am proud to be involved in the Hope After Polygamy 5K Run. This event is close to my heart as it aims to provide scholarships for children who have suffered immense trauma. These children need someone to believe in them, and together, we can make a difference.
The producers of "Secrets of Polygamy," which premiered on A&E, will be joining us. This show sheds light on the harsh realities these children face. It is our hope that, one day, this will no longer be an issue. Children deserve to have a voice, and it is our duty as adults to protect them from their abusers.
Unfortunately, it often seems that the government addresses the aftermath rather than preventing the problem. We need to step in and support these children before it's too late.
Please join us for the Hope After Polygamy 5K Run. Your participation and support can help provide a brighter future for these children. Let's come together as a community and show them that they are not alone.
